The question every buyer eventually asks a vendor, usually while turning a piece over under the booth lights, is how to tell if a gemstone is real. It is the right instinct and slightly the wrong question, because "real" is doing three different jobs at once. A heat-treated amethyst is real amethyst. A dyed agate slice is real agate. A tumbled lump of "cherry quartz" is real glass, and glass is a real material, just not the one on the label.
For a collector, the distinction is a matter of interest. For anyone reselling, it is a pricing question and a liability question: you do not want to pay natural-material prices for treated material, and you do not want to repeat a vendor's optimistic label to your own customer. Here is how to sort the three categories at a booth, with honesty about which tests work in your hand and which need a lab.
Three Categories, Not Two
Almost everything on a show floor falls into one of three buckets, and getting the bucket right matters more than any single test.
- Natural. Came out of the ground looking essentially the way it looks now. Cleaned, cut, polished, maybe stabilized, but the color and structure are the earth's work.
- Treated. Genuinely the mineral named, altered afterward to improve color, clarity, or durability. Heating, irradiation, dyeing, coating, resin filling, stabilizing. Treatment is legal, ancient, and everywhere. It is not deception unless it goes undisclosed.
- Simulant or synthetic. Something else wearing the name. Glass, plastic, resin composite, dyed lower-value stone, or a lab-grown crystal of the same chemistry sold without a qualifier.
The crystal and specimen trade leans heavily on the middle bucket, which is why "is it real" almost never resolves to a yes or no. The useful version of the question is: what is it, what was done to it, and does the price reflect that?
What "Real" Means to a Regulator
The clearest standard available comes from the FTC's Jewelry Guides, which govern how gemstones are described to buyers in the United States. They were written for the jewelry trade rather than the specimen trade, but they are the closest thing to a common rulebook the crystal business has, and they set a sensible bar.
Under those guides, a treatment should be disclosed when any one of three things is true:
- The treatment is not permanent.
- The treatment creates special care requirements for the stone.
- The treatment significantly affects the value of the stone.
That third condition is the one that catches most crystal-trade material. A dyed agate is permanent enough and needs no special handling, but the dye is the difference between a $4 slice and a $40 one, so it gets disclosed. The guides also reserve words like "natural," "real," and "genuine" for stones that actually are, and require lab-grown material to carry a plain qualifier such as "laboratory-created," "laboratory-grown," or "synthetic" wherever the name appears.
Practical takeaway for resellers: whatever a vendor tells you at the booth becomes what you tell your customer. If the vendor will not say what was done to a piece, you cannot make an honest label from it, and that is reason enough to pass.
Treatments You Will Meet on Every Show Floor
These are the common ones. None of them are scams. All of them change what a piece is worth.

Aura quartz deserves a note because it sells extremely well and is often mislabeled by people who genuinely do not know. It is real quartz bonded with a vaporized metal such as titanium, gold, or niobium in a vacuum chamber. The coating is durable but not indestructible, and abrasive cleaning will take it off, so it both requires special care and dramatically affects value. Sold as what it is, it is a great product. Sold as a naturally iridescent mineral, it is a problem.
How to Tell If Amethyst Is Real, and What Heat Does to It
Amethyst is the highest-volume purple thing in the business, so it draws both treatments and imitations. Two different questions come up.
Is this amethyst at all? Glass and synthetic quartz both appear as tumbles, spheres, and faceted points. Look for gas bubbles under a loupe, swirl or flow lines, mold seams on a "carved" shape, and color that is perfectly even everywhere. Natural amethyst almost always shows some zoning: color concentrated at the tips, phantom bands, a pale or milky base, small internal veils. Perfection at a low price is the strongest single warning sign in this entire category.
Has this amethyst been heated? Heat drives amethyst toward yellow, orange, and reddish brown, which is the origin of most commercial citrine. The trade largely treats "citrine" as a color name rather than a claim about origin, and natural citrine tends to be pale and lemony rather than deep orange. On clusters, the most reliable tell is the contrast: a bright orange crystal tip sitting on a stark white or gray base is the signature of an amethyst cluster that went through a kiln, because the heat changes the colored portion and leaves the rest bleached. Whole flats of identically colored specimens point the same way, since nature is not that consistent.
Green "prasiolite" is the same story with a different endpoint: almost all of it is heated or irradiated amethyst, and the honest labels say so.

Field Tests That Actually Work at a Booth
You are standing in a crowded aisle holding someone else's inventory. That rules out most of what the internet recommends. These are the checks that are fast, non-destructive, and genuinely informative:
- A 10x loupe. The single most useful tool you can carry. Bubbles mean glass. Swirls mean glass. Dye concentrated in cracks means dye. Nothing else you can do in ten seconds tells you as much.
- Look at the chips, drill holes, and unpolished bottoms. Dye and coating are surface events. Where the surface is broken, the truth shows: a white core in a "turquoise" bead, an uncolored interior under a rainbow sheen.
- A small magnet. Natural hematite is at most weakly attracted to a magnet. If a "hematite" ring or bead grabs the magnet hard, it is manufactured ferrite, sold under names like hematine.
- A UV torch. Not definitive, but many organic dyes and resin fillers fluoresce differently from the host stone, which can make a fracture-filled piece obvious in a second.
- Weight and temperature in the hand. Plastic and resin feel warm and light immediately. Stone feels cool and stays cool a beat longer. This one separates plastic from mineral reliably, and glass from quartz only weakly, so treat it as a prompt to look closer rather than a verdict.
- Compare across the table. Pick up five pieces of the same material. Natural variation is messy. If all five are the same shade, ask why.
Skip the scratch test. Quartz sits at 7 on the Mohs scale and typical glass around 5.5, which sounds decisive until you consider that you are damaging someone's merchandise to learn what a loupe would have told you.
Be honest about the ceiling here too. Modern heat treatment, irradiation, and good lab-grown quartz are frequently undetectable without gemological equipment, and no amount of squinting at a booth changes that. Past a certain price point, the answer is not a better test. It is a better vendor, or a lab report.
The Questions Are Better Than the Tests
Everything above is a fallback. On a show floor, the highest-value diagnostic tool is a direct question asked plainly, because a vendor who handles the material knows the answer and a vendor who does not is telling you something either way.
- "What locality is this from?" Specific answers (a mine, a region, a country plus a district) suggest someone close to the source. A vague answer on a specimen sold as fine material is a flag.
- "Has this been treated in any way? Heated, dyed, coated, stabilized?" Ask it as a normal, unloaded question, because it is one. The good answer is a straight yes or no with detail. A defensive answer is data.
- "How should I label this for my customers?" This is the question that separates wholesalers who expect you to resell from those who do not care. It also puts the disclosure obligation where it belongs, on the record, in front of you.
- "Is this consistent lot to lot?" Relevant if you intend to reorder. Treated material is often more consistent than natural, which can be a feature for a shop.
Vendors who work the same shows year after year are generally straightforward about all of this, because their business is repeat buyers rather than one-time tourists. Write Down What You Were Told
Here is where the field falls apart in practice. You ask the right questions at the booth, get a clear answer, and then buy from eleven more vendors that day. Three weeks later you are photographing a tray of orange quartz points and you genuinely cannot remember whether the man in the third aisle said they were natural or heated.
Both options at that point are bad. Guessing risks a description you cannot back, and leaving it off the label costs you the premium if the piece was natural after all.
The fix is unglamorous. Capture the treatment answer at the same moment as the price, attached to the specific purchase and the specific vendor, before you walk to the next booth.
